Snake: learn through an example

Open Snake, check the instructions and begin a round. Keep collecting apples. Hitting a wall or your body ends the round; filling the entire board wins. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Compare the starting position with the example in the Guide. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

Something to practise

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Notice the feedback after each input.

The goal to keep in mind

Keep collecting apples. Hitting a wall or your body ends the round; filling the entire board wins. The feedback beside the game helps you follow the round. The example below illustrates a decision.

Follow these playing steps

  1. Press Play to start the movement.
  2. Turn with arrow keys, swipes or the on-screen direction buttons.
  3. Each apple adds ten points and makes the snake longer.
  4. Pause when needed or start a new round.

How to use the controls

Keyboard arrows, swipe gestures or the four direction buttons. Play / pause controls the movement. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Use the visible help when you are unsure of the next input.

Try this example

When moving right, you may turn up or down, but cannot turn immediately left into your own neck. Compare this with the rule that governs the move. Keep the controls nearby.

Pay attention to this rule

The snake continues moving between inputs. Plan a route with space to turn. A different version of the game may use a different rule. After a move, check what changed. Decide which rule explains the new state before acting again.
