An introduction to playing Gomoku

Read the aim of Gomoku, then make your first move. Make five or more connected stones horizontally, vertically or diagonally. A full board without a line is a draw. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move. Choose a comfortable screen position before beginning. Keep the game area visible while you use its controls.

One thing to notice as you play

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Refer to the controls when needed.

The goal to keep in mind

Make five or more connected stones horizontally, vertically or diagonally. A full board without a line is a draw. Use the instructions to see which actions move you towards it. Try to explain the aim in your own words.

The steps to play

  1. Player 1 places the first stone on an empty intersection.
  2. Player 2 places a stone and turns alternate.
  3. Look for open lines and block your opponent’s threats.
  4. A winning line immediately ends the round.

How your actions work

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Use one clear input at a time.

See the idea in action

Four consecutive stones with an empty point at both ends creates two possible finishing moves. Focus on why the action is allowed, not only its outcome. Read the matching step again.

Where a round can go wrong

This is freestyle Gomoku, not Renju: there are no special forbidden opening or double-three rules. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use.
