How to play Nim

Use a short break to learn the rhythm of Nim. Remove the last counter on the board to win. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Make your first input carefully and watch the result. Use the example below to understand a decision.

Take a closer look while playing

Read one step at a time and try it on the playing area. Match the instruction to the control you use. Keep the objective visible.

What you are aiming for

Remove the last counter on the board to win. An attractive position is not enough unless the goal is met. Notice how the game responds to your input.

Follow these playing steps

  1. Player 1 chooses a pile.
  2. Remove at least one counter, and up to all counters, from that pile.
  3. The next player chooses a pile and an amount.
  4. Continue until no counters remain.

Getting comfortable with the controls

Use the on-screen controls with a mouse or touch. Read a button’s label before selecting it. Contact us with the game and device if a control does not respond.

One way to understand the rules

With heaps of 1, 2 and 3 counters, choose one heap and remove at least one counter from it. You cannot take from two heaps in the same turn. Use the example as a guide rather than a substitute for reading your board. Notice the change in the playing area.

Keep this in mind

Only one pile may be changed per turn. A different version of the game may use a different rule. Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board.
